Big Dell, as he is affectionately known, is one of the most recognisable faces in Australian sport. Currently playing a key role in St George Illawarra’s charge to this year’s premiership, Sailor has rekindled the form that saw him become one of the most devastating attacking weapons in the NRL for more than a decade. The Mackay product is a duel International. It was a major coup for the Australian Rugby Union when he switched codes in 2002. Sailor went on to play 37 Tests with the Wallabies. Sailor has won the respect of the Australian sporting community sitting out his ban and returning to become a role model for all, admitting he made a mistake and getting on with his career. With his big personality and natural confidence, Sailor is one of the true drawcards of the NRL and despite now being classed as a veteran, his form has remained strong this season. Even at home, Wendell’s partner Tara says his positive energy rubs off on children Tristan and Matisse, which has helped with their development, while Tristan analyses all of his father’s games and sits down for a talk when he gets home!
How hard is it spending so much time away from the kids during the season?
It seems like an eternity at times. At the Wallabies I had the luxury to take the kids away and see some special places around the world but you did miss home. Now at the Dragons you spend more time near home so you can work on a better consistent lifestyle with the kids. – Wendell Sailor
Do they take an active interest in your career?
Definitely Tristan, he likes to come in the sheds after the game and make comments about my performance – if I’ve had a shocker he will let me know. The boys have a bit of a laugh when Tristan grills me. – Wendell Sailor
Can it be hard being out in public with the kids, and having other children come up for autographs etc? Do they get jealous?
No they are fine but there was a time recently when Matisse said ‘I wish I had you to myself daddy’. – Wendell Sailor
Do they recognise him on television?
They do recognise him and cheer loudly! Matisse just cheers "Go Daddy" but Tristan will watch and analyse his game so they ca n chat about it when he gets home, very cute!
